QUESTION 1
Read the following statement and then answer the question that follows.
Every teacher must meet specific standards when teaching a first additional
language.
1.1 Discuss the standards set by Aitchison, Dixon, Pretorius, Reed and Verbeek
(2018) for graduate teachers using your own words to show an understanding of the
requirements.
Aitchison et al. (2018: 3) stipulate that graduate teachers should (1) possess deep knowledge
of both language structure and literacy strategies and know how to teach learners to read and
write effectively, (2) be able to plan and deliver systematic lessons in English First Additional
Language aligned with CAPS, focusing on reading and writing skills, and (3) demonstrate
mastery of the processes, skills and pedagogical content knowledge needed to teach English
in its spoken and written forms.
1.2 Identify one speaking component and discuss why it is more important than others
when teaching your learners.
One critical speaking component is pronunciation. Correct pronunciation ensures that
learners hear and reproduce sounds accurately, which supports their overall comprehension
and confidence. If learners cannot distinguish or produce key English phonemes, they may
misunderstand words and become discouraged (Nel & Müller, 2010: 636). By modelling clear
pronunciation, a teacher provides the comprehensible input necessary for learners to
internalize the sounds of the language and later apply them in speaking and listening.
