ASSIGNMENT 06
Question 1
Considering the diverse learner cohort at Harmony High School, define
inclusive education. Explain why embracing inclusivity is fundamentally
important within your country's socio-cultural, economic and political context,
especially for schools facing challenges similar to Harmony High. (25)

Inclusive education means that all learners, no matter their challenges or
differences, learn together in the same classroom. It does not matter if a
learner has a disability, speaks a different language, or struggles to learn —
they all belong in one school, with the right support to help them succeed. In
an inclusive school, teachers try their best to make sure every learner can take
part in lessons and feel like they belong. The aim is to make sure no learner
feels left out or pushed aside. Inclusive education is about fairness, equal
chances, and respect for everyone (Department of Basic Education, 2001).

At Harmony High School, the teachers work with learners who have learning
difficulties, visual impairments, and language barriers. These learners all have
different needs, but the school believes they should all learn together in one
school. This is the heart of inclusive education. It means making sure that the
school welcomes every learner and supports their learning in the best way
possible. The government of South Africa also supports this through the
Constitution, which says every person has equal rights and must be treated
with respect and fairness (Republic of South Africa, 1996).

In South Africa, inclusive education is very important because our country is
made up of people from different backgrounds, cultures, and languages. Our
past under apartheid caused many people to be separated based on race,
disability, and other factors. Many black learners and learners with disabilities
were not given proper education in the past. Today, we want to fix those
mistakes by making schools fair and open for everyone. That is why inclusive
education is so important — it helps to undo the unfairness of the past
(Department of Basic Education, 2014).

, South Africa has 11 official languages, and many learners speak a language at
home that is different from the one used at school. In some classrooms, a
learner may not understand the language the teacher uses. Inclusive education
helps by making space for learners to use their home language, and by helping
them learn the school language slowly and with support. This helps the
learners feel confident and happy in class, and they do not feel different from
others. Teachers can also use pictures, gestures, or visual aids to help learners
understand better.

Another big reason why inclusive education is important in South Africa is the
issue of poverty. Many schools are in poor communities, like Harmony High
School. These schools often do not have enough money to buy assistive tools,
like machines for learners who cannot see well, or to build ramps for learners
who use wheelchairs. Some schools also cannot hire more teachers or
assistants to help with learners who need extra support. This makes it harder
for the school to support every learner equally. But even in these difficult
conditions, inclusive education is still possible. Teachers can use simple
teaching tools, like using local materials to make learning fun and clear, or
pairing learners together to help each other.

At Harmony High, the school building is old, and this makes it difficult for some
learners to move around, especially if they have mobility issues. There may also
not be enough trained teachers who know how to teach learners with
disabilities. But the good thing is that the school leadership is working hard to
improve the situation. That is what inclusive education is all about — trying
your best with what you have, and always looking for ways to make learning
better for every child.

The South African government has promised to help schools like Harmony High
through plans like the White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education. This plan says
that every learner, no matter their ability or disability, must be given a chance
to learn in a normal school with support. It also says that schools must be
changed to remove the things that stop learners from learning. These could be
