, PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVIEW FOR ADMISSION TO A MASTER'S
PROGRAMME IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Interview formulated by: PYC4804 Student
INTERVIEW SCENARIO
This psychological interview is designed for use in selecting applicants for a Master’s
programme in Clinical Psychology at a South African university. The training
programme demands not only academic excellence but also psychological maturity,
empathy, and a well-rounded, reflective personality. Given the emotionally
demanding nature of clinical work, the interview aims to assess applicants’ readiness
for the role of a trainee psychologist in a diverse, multicultural society.
The interview will focus on psychological traits related to optimal development,
adaptability in social systems, and a holistic understanding of self and others. The
interview will assess the presence of specific personality characteristics such as
empathy, self-actualisation, emotional regulation, personal resilience, contextual
awareness, interpersonal sensitivity, and internal harmony.
THEORIES SELECTED AND THEIR RELEVANCE
The interview draws on three theoretical perspectives to explore a wide range of
traits:
1. Maslow’s Theory of Self-Actualisation (Chapter 11) – This theory is used
to assess optimal development characteristics such as empathy, autonomy,
creativity, and problem-solving abilities. It also offers a framework for
identifying whether an individual seeks purpose and growth beyond basic
survival.
2. The Ecosystemic Approach (Chapter 15) – This theory considers how
individuals are influenced by various interacting systems such as family,
culture, community, and institutions. It helps assess the candidate’s ability to
reflect on broader environmental influences and their role in social systems.
3. Eastern Perspectives (Chapter 16) – Eastern views emphasise balance,
mindfulness, detachment, and inner harmony. These values are important in
clinical practice where self-awareness, emotional control, and reflective
practices are essential.
