QUESTION 1
a. Introducing the Value and Purpose of PE (4 marks)
Introducing the value and purpose of Physical Education (PE) in a rural school setting where
structured PE is new requires a clear, culturally sensitive approach. I would begin by engaging both
learners and staff in a short introductory session explaining that PE is more than just physical
activity—it supports holistic development, including physical, mental, emotional, and social well-
being (Study Unit 1). I would emphasise how PE builds lifelong skills such as teamwork, discipline,
resilience, and goal-setting, which are vital not just in sports but in learners' academic and personal
lives. Using accessible language and local examples (like community soccer or dance), I would frame
PE as a space where all learners can grow and find enjoyment in movement, regardless of athletic
ability. For staff, I’d clarify how PE contributes to broader educational goals outlined in CAPS,
including cognitive development and inclusivity (DBE, 2011), thereby positioning it as an essential
component of the curriculum.

b. First Term PE Programme Outline (6 marks)
Given the constraints (minimal equipment and facilities), I would design a program focused on
bodyweight exercises, fundamental movement skills, and teamwork activities that require little to
no resources.
Week Focus Area Activities
1–2 Introduction to PE & Rules Icebreakers, stretching, forming teams
3–4 Locomotor skills Running games, relays, obstacle walking
5–6 Non-locomotor skills Balance tasks, yoga poses, body control drills
7–8 Object control Throwing using stones/sandbags, catching
9–10 Team games and Reflection Tag, simple invasion games, self-assessments
This plan draws on the developmental focus outlined in Study Unit 6 and addresses the reality of
limited resources in rural schools (Study Unit 12).
c. Teaching Strategies to Promote Participation and Motivation (5 marks)
Two key teaching strategies I would use are Task Simplification and Student-Centred Learning.
• Task Simplification involves modifying activities to suit different ability levels. For instance,
instead of asking learners to throw a ball a long distance, I would adjust the distance
according to each group’s capabilities, helping all learners feel successful and included (Study
Unit 6). This promotes confidence and sustained participation.
• Student-Centred Learning includes allowing learners to take part in planning games or
leading warm-ups. This increases ownership and motivation while fostering leadership and
social skills (Study Unit 12). For example, learners might help select or modify traditional
games, ensuring the content resonates culturally and personally.
