1. INTRODUCTION

Research in education is deeply influenced by the philosophical underpinnings of different research
paradigms, particularly their ontological and epistemological assumptions. Ontology refers to the
nature of reality and what exists, while epistemology concerns how knowledge about that reality is
acquired and understood. Together, these foundational beliefs shape how researchers formulate
questions, select methodologies, interpret data, and draw conclusions (Scotland, 2012). In
educational research, understanding these assumptions is crucial, as they affect not only the
methods used but also the types of insights and transformations possible in classrooms and learning
systems. This essay compares and contrasts the ontological and epistemological assumptions of six
major research paradigms: Positivism, Interpretivism, Critical Theory, Postmodernism, Critical
Realism, and Decoloniality. The discussion begins by analysing each paradigm’s stance on reality and
knowledge, with an emphasis on their methodological implications and relevance to education. The
final section will provide a critical evaluation of which paradigm makes the most compelling
contribution to the field of education, substantiating the claim with philosophical and pedagogical
reasoning.

2. POSITIVISM

2.1 Ontological Assumptions

Positivism adopts a realist ontology, meaning it views reality as objective, singular, and independent
of human perception. Reality exists “out there” and can be observed, measured, and explained
through empirical evidence. According to positivist thought, the social world operates under the
same natural laws as the physical world and can be studied in a similar manner (Cohen, Manion &
Morrison, 2018). This assumption presumes that human behaviour, like physical phenomena, is
governed by cause-and-effect relationships that can be uncovered through scientific inquiry. In
education, this implies that learning outcomes and instructional interventions can be objectively
measured, quantified, and generalized across contexts, contributing to the development of
universal educational truths.
