Decision-making is a critical sub-topic under the CAPS-aligned theme "Development of
the Self in Society". Grade 8 learners, aged approximately 13–14, are in the early
stages of adolescence—a developmental period characterized by increased autonomy,
peer influence, identity formation, and exposure to social and academic pressures. At
this stage, learners begin to make decisions with more lasting consequences, such as
choosing friends, setting study priorities, and resisting risky behaviours.
The CAPS Life Orientation curriculum emphasizes the development of critical and
creative thinking skills to empower learners to manage their lives responsibly.
