, 1. Abstract
This research proposal focuses on understanding how public primary school teachers in
South Africa think about and practise inclusive education in their classrooms. Even
though the government created a policy called Education White Paper 6 in 2001 to
promote inclusive education, many schools especially those that lack proper resources,
still struggle to make inclusion work properly (Department of Education, 2001). This
study will look closely at this issue by using a qualitative research method. Specifically,
the research will use an interpretive case study design, where the researcher will speak
to five teachers from different public primary schools. These teachers will be interviewed
using semi-structured interviews, which means the researcher will ask guiding questions
but also allow teachers to share their own thoughts and stories freely.
Through these interviews, the study will gather deep, detailed information about how
these teachers feel about inclusive education, what they believe it means, and how they
try to apply it in their daily teaching. To make sense of this information, the research will
follow Braun and Clarke’s (2006) method of thematic analysis. This means the
researcher will look for common themes or patterns in what the teachers say. The goal
is to find out what helps or blocks teachers from doing inclusive teaching well. This
includes looking at both the psychological factors like the teacher’s attitude or
confidence and contextual factors such as school resources or support from others that
influence their actions.
The findings from this research will help explain the gap between what the policy says
about inclusive education and what is really happening in schools. It will give useful
suggestions for how to better train and support teachers, as well as how to improve the
way policies are used in practice (Engelbrecht et al., 2016). The aim is to help create
fair and supportive learning environments for all children, especially those with different
