QUESTION 1 [30 MARKS]

1.1 Define the following: (20)

a. Particle

A particle is a small localized object to which can be ascribed physical
or chemical properties such as mass and charge. It may refer to
subatomic entities (like electrons), atoms, molecules, or larger
aggregates depending on the context. In physics, particles are
considered the basic units of matter and energy.

b. Atomic model

An atomic model is a theoretical representation of the structure of an
atom. It explains how subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, and
electrons) are arranged and behave. Notable models include Dalton’s
solid sphere model, Thomson’s plum pudding model, Rutherford’s
nuclear model, Bohr’s planetary model, and the modern quantum
mechanical model.

c. Subatomic

Subatomic refers to particles or structures that are smaller than an atom.
These include protons, neutrons, and electrons, which are the
fundamental components of an atom. Subatomic particles can also
include even smaller particles like quarks and leptons.
