and what are their specific responsibilities and actions?

In my opinion, curriculum leadership should be a shared
responsibility primarily driven by the Head of Department
(HoD) and subject teachers, under the strategic guidance of the
school principal. While the principal ensures that the school

, adheres to national curriculum policies and frameworks, the
HoDs are best positioned to lead the implementation process
within their respective subject areas and grade levels.
For my subject — Creative Arts in the Intermediate Phase —
the HoD should provide instructional leadership, support
teachers in unpacking the CAPS curriculum, and align teaching
strategies with learning outcomes. However, teachers
themselves are key agents of curriculum leadership, as they
engage directly with the learners and interpret curriculum
intentions into practical classroom experiences.
Specific responsibilities of effective curriculum leaders
include:
 Curriculum interpretation and planning: Leaders must
ensure that teachers understand the content and skills
prescribed in the curriculum, breaking it down into
manageable units and lessons.
 Facilitating collaboration: Regular departmental meetings
should be used to share teaching strategies, assessment
tools, and learner support techniques.
 Monitoring and evaluation: Leaders should conduct
classroom observations and moderate learner assessments
to ensure consistency and quality across the grade.
 Professional development: Curriculum leaders must
identify teacher development needs and arrange relevant
workshops or peer learning sessions.
 Resource management: Effective curriculum leadership
involves ensuring that teaching and learning materials are
available, adequate, and aligned with the subject outcomes.
