Question 1 (Chapter 4)
1. Who should be responsible for providing curriculum
leadership within the school context, and what are the
responsibilities and actions associated with effective
curriculum leadership?
[15 marks | 300–500 words]
Curriculum leadership plays a central role in ensuring that
teaching and learning in schools are effective, consistent, and
aligned with national education standards. In my opinion,
curriculum leadership should be a shared responsibility, but
primarily led by the school principal, heads of departments
(HODs), and subject or grade leaders. These individuals are
strategically positioned to influence teaching practices, monitor
implementation, and support continuous professional
development.
At the core, the school principal provides overall instructional
leadership by creating an environment that prioritises curriculum
delivery. The principal should ensure that curriculum
implementation aligns with CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment
Policy Statement), allocate appropriate resources, and promote a
culture of accountability and collaboration. They must also
facilitate regular staff development and ensure that policies
support effective teaching.
