Question 1.1: Applying the Seven Stages of ISWP to the Case

The Integrated Social Work Practice (ISWP) model includes seven interrelated stages
used to guide effective intervention. Applying these stages to the case of the distressed
mother and her son addicted to nyaope:
Stage 1: Engagement
I would first establish a working relationship with the mother through empathetic
listening and non-judgmental communication. I would ensure confidentiality and create
a safe space where she can express her emotions and concerns freely. This would also
help establish trust as a foundation for further intervention.
Stage 2: Intake
I would formally gather key information, such as the son’s addiction history, the mother's
health issues, her relapse risk, the daughters’ unemployment status, and her concerns
about systemic drug issues in the community. This would include documentation and
consent for service.
Stage 3: Assessment
I would conduct a holistic bio-psycho-social assessment that takes into account all the
factors affecting the family’s wellbeing. I would explore the son’s substance use
patterns, particularly his dependency on nyaope, as well as his aggressive behaviour
and involvement in gang-related activities, which pose risks to both himself and others. I
would assess the mother’s current stress levels, her vulnerability to relapse into
substance use, and her physical health challenges, including hypertension and asthma,
which may be worsened by emotional strain. I would also examine the family’s financial
situation, noting the socio-economic pressure caused by unemployment and the lack of
meaningful activity for both daughters, despite one having completed matric and the
other possessing a practical skill. Finally, I would evaluate the broader community
context, especially the presence of drug trafficking allegedly facilitated by Mr. Moloto, as
