3.1 LU1: MATHEMATICS IN SOCIETY
Differences between the three views of mathematics:
1. Platonist View:
o Sees mathematics as a collection of abstract truths that exist
independently of human thought.
o Mathematics is discovered, not invented.
o Example: The number π exists whether or not humans are aware of it.
2. Constructivist View:
o Believes mathematics is a human creation developed over time. o
Emphasises learning and understanding through constructing knowledge.
o Example: Learners build understanding of fractions through hands-on
experiences.
3. Empirical View:
o Views mathematics as arising from real-world experiences.
o It is practical and applied to solve everyday problems. o Example:
Learning measurements by cooking or building.
