BTE2601
ASSIGNMENT 2 (YEAR MODULE)
DUE: 14 JULY 2025
THOROUGH ANSWERS, PROPERLY REFERENCED

QUESTION 1
1.1 Apply the concept of reflection-in-action to a situation where learners are disengaged during
a lesson. (5)

Reflection-in-action refers to a teacher’s ability to think critically and adjust strategies while
teaching, as the lesson unfolds, to address emerging challenges. For instance, during a Grade 4
Natural Sciences lesson about plant parts, I noticed that learners became disengaged, with some
yawning and others distracted by their peers. Instead of continuing as planned, I immediately
reflected in action by asking myself why they were disengaged and realised that my explanation
was too abstract without concrete examples. I responded by pausing the lesson to bring in real
plant samples I had in my bag for the practical later in the period. I allowed learners to touch and
observe the roots, stems, and leaves as I explained, asking them questions about what they saw.
This reflective response in action helped me adapt my approach by integrating tactile learning to
capture their interest. As a result, learners became more attentive and curious, raising their hands
to answer questions and engaging in discussion. Thus, by reflecting-in-action, I adapted my lesson
delivery instantly, leading to improved learner engagement through practical, interactive teaching
