QUESTION 1
1.1 Apply the concept of reflection-in-action to a situation where learners are disengaged during a
lesson. (5 marks)
Reflection-in-action is a concept developed by Donald Schön, describing a teacher’s ability to think and
respond spontaneously during the teaching process. It involves actively monitoring the classroom
environment and making immediate adjustments to improve learning outcomes. For example, if learners
become disengaged during a lesson—perhaps by showing lack of focus, distraction, or passive
behaviour—the teacher notices these signs in real time.
In this situation, the teacher reflects on what is causing disengagement—maybe the activity is too
difficult, the content is uninteresting, or the pace is too fast. The teacher then adapts their approach by
changing the method or content delivery. For instance, they might switch from a lecture to a group
discussion, incorporate a multimedia resource, or ask more open-ended questions to stimulate
participation.
This reflective response helps reconnect learners with the lesson and increases engagement. The
teacher’s in-the-moment awareness and flexibility create a dynamic learning environment that
responds to students’ needs, rather than rigidly following a lesson plan. By applying reflection-in-
action, the teacher fosters improved attention and motivation, ultimately
