ASSIGNMENT 2 (YEAR MODULE)..
DUE DATE: 14 JULY 2025..
PREVIEW:
QUESTION 1
1.1 Apply the concept of reflection-in-action to a situation where learners are disengaged during a
lesson. (5)
Reflection-in-action refers to a teacher’s ability to think critically and adaptively while teaching,
responding immediately to unexpected situations during the lesson rather than waiting to reflect
afterwards. For example, imagine teaching a Grade 5 Natural Sciences lesson on photosynthesis, but
midway through explaining the process, I notice that learners appear bored, distracted, and are
whispering to each other instead of listening.
Realising their disengagement, I pause my planned explanation and reflect in action by asking myself
why they are losing focus. I might deduce that my explanation is too abstract without visual or interactive
support. As an immediate reflective response, I change my approach by drawing a quick diagram of a
plant on the board, showing arrows indicating sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, and then ask learners
to stand up and physically demonstrate how these elements enter the plant and produce oxygen.
This adaptation immediately re-engages the class, as they now participate actively rather than passively
listening, leading to improved understanding and concentration during the rest of the lesson.

Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory identifies different environmental layers influencing a
child’s development, with the microsystem being the immediate environment like family and school.
