ASSIGNMENT 6
1. My original answer and why
My opinion on this when I completed assignment 1 was expressed by option C,
I really believe the resources to solve the rhino problem can be directed
somewhere else, somewhere more important like saying the dying children.
2. My current answer and why
My current answer is E, we must save the rhino because it is the right thing to
do. I have changed my mind because even human beings are animals, and as
such we don’t have to cause such unnecessary pain and suffering to other
animals. I think animals have intrinsic value, and if we thought like this then we
would protect our animals instead of killing and causing so much suffering. I
now have a non-anthropocentric view and I believe that nature has intrinsic
value. Protecting and saving the rhino is also part of good environmental
ethics. The pain caused to the rhinos is most probably done by people with
instrumental value who only see it as a means to an end.
3. (a) Do I really practice the values?
Yes I do practice these values, I really believe there is no need to cause so
much suffering to these rhinos when we can coexist with them, we need to
respect Mother Nature with its species, and we as people should not be reason
why a species goes extinct. Seeing nature as having instrumental value is really
selfish, the reason we do not care is.
(b) Can I really claim that these are my virtues?
I can. I know many people will argue that nature has instrumental value, and I
do understand how it can instrumental as we as human being get our natural
resources from nature. We seem to just take and take and we don’t even
respect nature, I bet the world would be a better place if no human lived it in,
because we have taken so much from nature. Although nature can be used
instrumentally, it is one of the reasons tourist visit our country and boost our
economy, but it has intrinsic value.
(c) Is what I am saying really what I do?
Yes, we rely on nature to survive as human. The environment or nature was
there before human beings were created, this is a clear indication that it does
not need us to survive but we need it to survive. The best thing we can do is to
