1.1 Define the ‘additive language approach’. (4 marks)
The additive language approach is a teaching strategy where learners' home languages
are valued and maintained while they learn an additional language, like English. This
approach does not replace the mother tongue but adds the new language, promoting
bilingualism and cultural identity.

Activity: “The Thumb Song”
Objective: Introduce the “th” sound (as in “thumb”).
Instructions:
1. Show learners a picture of a thumb and say the word slowly.
2. Let learners touch their thumb and repeat “th-th-thumb.”
3. Sing a short song: “This is my thumb, th-th-thumb!” (to a simple melody).
4. Learners identify “th” sound in other words like “think” and “thank you.”
