ASSIGNMENT 2 2025
DUE; 4 JULY 2025

To complete this assignment, please work through learning units 1, 2 and 3.
Question 1

1.1 Define learner engagement

Learner engagement is a deep, ongoing involvement that learners have with their
learning environment. It is more than just paying attention in class. According to
Learning Unit 3, engagement includes
Emotional connection (feeling motivated and interested),
Behavioural participation (doing tasks, asking questions),
Cognitive effort (thinking and problem-solving).
Engaged learners feel a sense of belonging, value education, and take ownership of
their learning. They also show interest because they are motivated and feel capable.
(Learning Unit 3.4)

1.2 List five factors that affect learner engagement in science

Teacher confidence and skills – Some teachers avoid teaching difficult topics like
physics and chemistry due to lack of confidence.
Irrelevant content – Learners feel the science content does not relate to their lives.
Too much theory and too little practical work – Learners enjoy experiments but
rarely get to do them.
Overcrowded classrooms and lack of resources – There are too many learners and
not enough materials.
Complex language and abstract content – Learners find the language used in
science difficult to understand.
(Learning Unit 3.6)
