Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✔ Use the 'Evaluating coursebook material' checklist from Unit 10 to write a general evaluation of
the book based on the unit provided. The checklist is also on the assignment instructions page.
✔ Comment on any four items from the checklist. This must be presented as a coherent essay, not
just a list.
✔ Then say, based on the unit provided, whether you personally would like to use the book with
an advanced (C1) class and why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a
wrong response to this part.
✔ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✔ Write 300 - 500 words.
Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
My first impression of the sample of Cutting Edge Advanced, Student Book Unit 1 was incredibly
positive.
The material is clearly structured, one can easily see the progress made throughout the lesson,
with a clear outcome at the end of the lesson. I found the content to be logical and well organized.
The topic of Globalization and urbanization is still very relevant and will keep learners engaged.
All skill aspects of reading, writing, listening, and speaking are covered by the coursebook by
providing different tasks such as individual exercises, work in pairs and groups. There are multiple
opportunities for the learners to practice the language through discussions with classmates,
individual exercises, reading of texts and articles as well as listening to provided audio. The
activities also become progressively more challenging.
The coursebook provides different approaches to practice, recycle and revise the target language.
Students are given the opportunity to engage in group discussions as well as writing a report,
which encourages them to produce the language. The sample given, mostly makes use of group
work and group discussions, which would make it more suitable for in-person classes as opposed
to online classes. The lesson may have to be adapted for online classes, making use of the
individual tasks/exercises.
Visually, learners may find the layout of the material a bit cluttered, with different texts and
pictures scattered over one page, which might become distracting to certain learners.
Based on this unit, I would recommend using this coursebook with an advanced C1 class. I found
the book extremely helpful and versatile. Speaking and listening are important skills when using

, English to communicate, and it is evident that this book has a strong focus on these two skills. The
variety of activities makes this coursebook an excellent choice for teaching English. It caters for
multiple different learning styles and can be used in all sorts of class-scenarios.

Assignment C - Part 2.2
Activities
Three follow-up activities for exploiting the authentic text with advanced students
✔ Bear in mind that your C1/C2-level students are at a very high level of English proficiency. Please
ensure that your activities are sufficiently challenging.
First Activity
a) A dictionary activity, for vocabulary and dictionary skills development,
AFTER the class has read or listened to your selected text.
This task must promote the use of a dictionary. It could be used later in the same lesson or in
another lesson. You can encourage students to find out more about the vocabulary items you
have selected for pre-teaching or make a different selection. If you use the same items that you
pre-taught, bear in mind that students will already know the definitions of these words, so your
task will need to challenge them on more than this.
