Question 1
: Teaching Reading and Viewing, appropriate for a Grade 4 English Home
Language multilingual classroom in South Africa:
1.1 Explain the difference between bottom-up and top-down approaches to
reading. (3)
The bottom-up approach to reading starts with decoding individual letters and
words to build meaning, focusing on phonics, word recognition, and sentence
structure. It assumes learners need to understand the smaller parts before
grasping the whole text.
The top-down approach begins with the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences,
and expectations to make sense of the text. Learners use what they know about
the world and language to interpret the meaning of the text.
The main difference lies in how meaning is constructed: bottom-up builds from
text to meaning, while top-down builds from meaning to text.
