Origins of the Black Power Movement
There was racial discrimination in the Northern states
- Civil Rights activists were continually beaten and abused
- Some people were unhappy with the non-violent tactics of the Civil Rights Movement
Riots in the Ghettos
- Bad living conditions in the ghettos led to general dissatisfaction
o Overcrowding, inadequate schools and housing
- Housing was usually owned by white landlords
o They would exploit their tennants
o High rent and ill-maintained apartments
- Schools did not receive money
o Bad standard of education led to a cycle of poverty
Bitterness accumulated and made people turn to the Black Power Movement

Aims
- Seize freedom from opression
- Encourage black people to be proud of their culture and history (Black Nationalism)
Tactics
- Willing and prepared to use violence
o “By any means necessary”
- Any necessary defence needed to protect against white supremacists
Wanted to be self reliant (“Black Separatism”)
- Created programmes to improve black housing and facilities within the ghettos
- Wanted to encourage black business and entrepreneurship
Were an exlusive movement that only wanted African American members
