Teenage pregnancy, particularly in rural South Africa, is a multifaceted issue influenced
by poverty, gender inequality, cultural taboos, and limited access to health education
and services. The interplay of these factors often leads to social disempowerment,
especially among adolescent girls. This assignment engages critically with the
community work process by analysing a case study from Limpopo province, where
these social determinants converge. A structured community development model is
applied, incorporating essential phases and theoretical approaches to facilitate
meaningful social transformation.

1.1 Theoretical Discussion

The community education model is a participatory and dialogical framework designed to
foster empowerment through collective learning and critical reflection. Anchored in the
philosophical stance of Paulo Freire’s pedagogy, the model assumes that knowledge
should emerge from lived experience and mutual dialogue, rather than be imposed by
external authorities (Freire, 1970). This approach challenges the traditional, top-down
transmission of information and instead encourages horizontal, co-constructed learning
that leads to social action.

Community education deliberately engages with structural inequalities, promoting social
justice by targeting issues such as poverty, gender-based violence, and public health
disparities. In the South African context, it offers a transformative platform to disrupt
entrenched taboos around sexuality and HIV/AIDS, particularly within rural communities
where cultural norms often inhibit open communication (Mokgatle & Madiba, 2017).

This model aligns closely with the empowerment paradigm in social work, which posits
that education, when contextualised and inclusive, can build agency, challenge
marginalisation, and foster resilience (Swanepoel & De Beer, 2011). Its strength lies in
