Question 1: Protecting Child's Rights (15 marks)

Social workers have a very important role when it comes to protecting children's rights.
These rights include participation, dignity, and always acting in the best interest of the
child. This means making sure children are listened to, respected, and safe in every
decision that affects them.

For example, if a child is being abused at home, a social worker should speak with the
child in a calm and respectful way, listen to their feelings, and involve them in planning
what happens next. Even young children have the right to say how they feel and what
they want.

The social worker must also protect the child’s dignity. This means not shaming them,
keeping their information private, and treating them kindly. Decisions should always be
based on what is best for the child, like placing them in a safe home or providing
counselling and support.

Another example is when a child is placed in foster care. The social worker must make
sure the child understands what is happening and that the placement supports the
child’s well-being, culture, and emotional needs.

Question 2: Continuum of Care (15 marks)

Child protection is not just about reacting to abuse—it’s also about preventing harm and
helping families. The continuum of care includes five levels:

1. Prevention – This includes programs like parenting workshops, school
awareness campaigns, and support groups. It aims to stop abuse before it starts.
