, To what extent do socialists agree on the role of the state
Evolutionary socialist, some form of commitment to democracy and peaceful means of
getting towards a socialist state, Webb argued for a parliamentary road after the
working class got the right to vote they would vote for socialist parties such as the
Labour party Evolutionary socialists reject state sanctioned violence and for the most
part accept the state whereas R socialists would also oppose this violence,Luxemburg
argued that the russian revolution damaged Marxs name and create not a dictatorship of
the proletariat he envisioned but a small group of elite who dominated the population
as much as the Tsar did, which why Luxemburg calls for a peaceful mass strike to
overthrow the state
However Luxemburg still advocated the overthrow of the state just in a peaceful way,
having similarities on how the state has taken over eg. through peaceful means doesn't
really show agreement on the need for the state in the first place, therefore showing clear
disagreement between R and E socialists
R socialists argue that the state is bourgeois and an agent of the m/c, representative
democracy is a sham ( state causes depp inequality and class suppression), they want to
get rid of it and want the w/c to develop class consciousness, work together to
overthrow the state, R believed that the state should be overthrown in order to control
the economy, ,Marx described this as historical materialism ( those who control the
means of production control the destiny of society), R believe that history tell us to
overthrow the state,Marx dialectic ( deep division always leads to conflict) this means
that overthrowing these injustices was inevitable and that once the state is overtaken,
you'll have a short term dictatorship of the proletariat, they'll be no socialism because
there'll be no need for a state because a communist society will come instead, however, E
socialists believe that the state can be utilised for good and can be used to bring about a
socialist society, through gradual reform overtime using the institutions of the state,
Webb argued that with the help of a vanguard elite, trained technocrats and support
from the w/c we can create a society that is for everyone and you can get socialism
through state measures overtime, this shows a clear disagreement as E believes you need
the state but R disagrees
