Agenda Item 2.2: Discussion on Possible Ways to Get Adequate Water Supply in
Soshangana Township
The Chairperson, Ms Tancred, opened the discussion by highlighting the ongoing water
scarcity in Soshangana township and emphasised the urgent need to find viable
solutions. Members of the Civic Organisation expressed concern about the lack of
action from the Ward Councillor and the Municipal Manager, despite previous
engagements and formal complaints submitted by the community.
During the discussion, members suggested several strategies to improve water access.
One of the key proposals was to draft a formal petition signed by residents and submit it
to both the Municipal Manager and the Department of Water and Sanitation. It was
agreed that this petition should be supported by photographic evidence and testimonies
from affected households to demonstrate the severity of the issue.
Another proposal was to approach non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private
companies for possible short-term water donations and long-term infrastructure
development. A few members volunteered to research relevant NGOs and compile a list
of potential partners.
The idea of engaging with local media outlets to publicise the issue was also discussed.
Members agreed that raising public awareness could pressure municipal officials to act.
It was further proposed that a community representative be appointed to speak on local
radio and share the township's plight.
Members also agreed that requesting an urgent meeting with the Ward Councillor and
inviting representatives from the Municipal Water Department would be critical. The
Civic Organisation will formally request this meeting within the next seven days.
