ASSIGNMENT 2 2025

UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 13 JUNE 2025

, Foundations in English Language Studies

Question 1

1.1 Provide words and explain place of articulation (12 marks)

a) Palatal
Example word: measure
Explanation: The sound /ʒ/ is produced by raising the middle part of the tongue to the
hard palate. It’s called palatal because the hard palate is involved.

b) Alveolar
Example word: time
Explanation: The /t/ sound is produced by placing the tongue against the alveolar ridge
just behind the upper front teeth. It is called alveolar because of this contact point.

c) Labio-dental
Example word: fish
Explanation: The /f/ sound is made by touching the bottom lip to the upper front teeth.
“Labio” refers to lips and “dental” to teeth.

d) Velar
Example word: go
Explanation: The /g/ sound is produced by raising the back of the tongue to the soft
palate (velum). Hence the name velar.

e) Dental
Example word: think
Explanation: The /θ/ sound is made by placing the tongue between the upper and
lower teeth. Called dental because “dent” means tooth.

f) Glottal
Example word: uh-**oh*
