Title: Evaluating Sources for a Literature Review on AI in Higher Education
Due: 13 June 2025
Task 1: Source Evaluation
1. Prioritizing Sources for the Literature Review
In a scholarly literature review, the prioritization of sources must align with academic
expectations of credibility, rigour, and relevance. Given this, peer-reviewed journal
articles and government reports should be prioritized, while the blog post and Wikipedia
page must be approached with caution, primarily for background understanding or initial
exploration of terminology and emerging discourse.
Evaluation of Each Source Type
1. Peer-Reviewed Journal Article
• Reliability: These articles are subjected to critical scrutiny by domain experts prior
to publication, enhancing the validity and objectivity of findings (Badenhorst et al.,
2015). Journals such as Computers & Education and The Journal of Higher
Education offer empirically grounded and theoretically framed studies.
• Authorship: Typically authored by credentialed scholars, often with PhDs or
extensive research backgrounds in AI or educational technology.
• Publication Process: Peer review ensures methodological soundness, ethical
compliance, and scholarly contribution.
• Academic Value: Provides robust empirical data and conceptual models. For
instance, Holmes, Bialik, and Fadel’s (2019) work presents a systemic analysis of
AI’s pedagogical implications.
• Contribution: Integral to the literature review, offering evidence to support
arguments and identify research gaps.
