ASSIGNMENT 2 SEMESTER 1 2025
UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 13 JUNE 2025
, Emergent Mathematics
Question 1: Emergent Mathematics
1.1 Differentiate between mathematical concepts and mathematical skills. Provide
an example for each. (6)
Mathematical concepts are the ideas and understandings that form the
foundation of mathematics. These are abstract ideas like quantity, size, shape, or
position.
o Example: A child understands that “3” means a group of three objects, no
matter what the objects are (e.g., 3 apples or 3 cars).
Mathematical skills are the actions or procedures used to apply concepts in
real situations. These are practical abilities like counting, measuring, or sorting.
o Example: A child uses their counting skill to count five blocks to build a
tower.
1.2 Define the terms and give two examples for each. (21)
1.2.1 Number sense (3)
Definition: Number sense is the understanding of numbers and their
relationships, including the ability to recognize, compare, and work with numbers
flexibly.
Examples:
1. Knowing that 8 is more than 5 without counting.
2. Grouping objects into twos to count more efficiently.
1.2.2 Patterns (3)
Definition: Patterns are repeated arrangements or sequences that follow a rule
or structure.
