, INTRODUCTION
South Africa’s development agenda is deeply influenced by the global Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a universal framework for promoting
economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. This assignment
explores the alignment between South Africa’s national development planning—
particularly the National Development Plan (NDP)—and the SDGs. The first part
examines how government policies, such as those addressing poverty reduction,
education, health, and infrastructure, reflect the goals outlined in the SDGs. Practical
examples are used to illustrate this linkage. The second part of the assignment
presents a case study of a selected organisation and analyses how it contributes to
the implementation of the SDGs through its programmes and practices. This analysis
connects theory on sustainable development with real-world application, showing
how institutions at the local level can play a critical role in advancing global goals.
Together, both sections highlight the importance of integrated, inclusive, and
measurable strategies in achieving sustainable development in South Africa.
1.1 LINKAGES BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA’S NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
PLANNING AND THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)
1.1.1 Overview of the SDGs and South Africa’s Commitment
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global framework of 17 goals
adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015. These goals aim to end
poverty, reduce inequality, protect the environment, and ensure peace and
prosperity by 2030 (UNDP, 2015). South Africa is fully committed to achieving these
goals. The South African government has aligned its national development agenda
with the SDGs through key documents such as the National Development Plan
(NDP) and the Medium-Term Strategic Framework (MTSF) (Country Report, 2019).
The MTSF (2019–2024) is the main implementation plan for the NDP. It outlines
seven national priorities that match several SDGs. Through this framework,
government departments and municipalities are expected to plan, budget, and report
in line with these linked goals.
