ASSIGNMENT 2 2025
UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: AUGUST 2025
, Mathematics for Foundation Phase Teachers
QUESTION 1
1.1 Identify TWO (2) diagrams that you can use to teach doubling to the
Foundation Phase.
1. Number Line Diagram
2. Dot Array Diagram
1.2 Motivate how you will use each diagram in Question 1.1. Do not copy from the
study guide.
1. Number Line Diagram:
I would use a number line by placing markers at equal intervals. For example, if
the child needs to double 3, they would start at 0 and make two jumps of 3. The
final position (6) shows the double. This visual movement helps learners see
addition as repeated action, reinforcing the concept of doubling as “adding the
same number twice.”
2. Dot Array Diagram:
I would draw a row of dots (e.g., 4 dots) and then ask learners to draw the same
number of dots directly underneath. Then we count all the dots together. This
helps learners visualize and internalize the concept of two equal groups, which
builds a foundation for multiplication later on.
