Tenses
Present Simple I study Facts, habits, schedules
Present I am studying Actions happening right now
Continuous
Present Perfect I have studied Action from the past describes the subject now
Present Perfect I have been studying Action from the bast, continuing into the present
Continuous

Present Simple (subject + verb)
Fact: That is my phone.
Habit: He studies every day.
Schedule: On weekends, we play soccer.
Present Continuous (subject + to be + verb-ing)
Iets dat nu gebeurt: You are watching that video. An airplane is flying through the sky.
Present Perfect (subject + have/has + past participle)
I have studied English for three
years.
Present Perfect Continuous (subject + have/has + been + verb-ing)
Iets wat in het verleden is begonnen en continu doorgaat tot aan het heden: I have been
studying Spanish for 8 years.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Past Simple I studied Action started and finished in the past
Past Continuous I was studying Action continuing over time in the past
Past Perfect I had studied Previous context for another action in the past
Past Perfect I had been studying Previous continuous context for another action
Continuous in the past, which stops the context

Past Simple (subject + past simple)
Iets is begonnen en geëindigd in het verleden: She worked last night.
Past Continuous (subject + was/were + verb-ing)
We were living in Canada when we got
engaged.
Past Perfect (subject + had + past participle)
zich altijd af vóór de andere gebeurtenis: Sarah had already left by the time he got home.
Past Perfect Continuous (subject + had been + verb-ing)
zet de gebeurtenis van de past perfect continuous tot stop: I had been watching TV when the
power went out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Future Simple I will (I’ll) study Actions we believe will happen in the future
Future I will be studying Action we believe will continue for some time in
Continuous the future

1

, Future Perfect I will have studied To talk about actions that we finished by a
certain time in the future
Future Perfect I will have been A continuous action that will be completed at a
Continuous studying time in the future

Future Simple (subject + will + verb)
I will call you tomorrow. Deze vorm kan ook
“going to” gebruiken in plaats van “will”: I’m going to call you tomorrow.
Future Continuous (subject + will be + verb-ing)
Iets waarvan je denkt dat het voor een tijdje gaat gebeuren in de toekomst: I’ll be running
errands all afternoon. They’re going to be travelling all summer.
Future Perfect (subject + will have + past participle)
She will have moved to a new
house before the end of the year. They will have come home by the spring. Let dus op
woorden zoals “before” en “by”, want deze geven het tijdslimiet aan.
Future perfect Continuois (subject + will have been + verb-ing)
Iets wat voor een tijdje zal gebeuren in de toekomst en op een gegeven tijd eindigt: He will
have been driving for 6 hours straight when he arrives.
(the duration) aan. Deze vorm wordt niet vaak gebruikt.
