Section A - Knowledge-based questions
1) Identify the TWO language skills that can be acquired after a language is
learned.
After learning a language, two important language skills that can be acquired are
reading and writing. These skills help a person to understand written texts and to
express thoughts clearly in writing. Reading involves understanding words and
sentences, which helps to build vocabulary and knowledge (Harris, 1990, p. 45).
Writing is about using the language to create messages, stories, or information for
others to read (Grabe & Kaplan, 1996, p. 34). These skills are usually learned after
speaking and listening, and they are very important for school and work. Without
reading and writing, it is hard to take part fully in society.

2) Explain, in your own words, the difference between receptive skills and
productive skills in communication AND provide an example of a receptive skill
AND a productive skill.
Receptive and productive skills are both important in communication.
Receptive skills mean taking in information, like when we listen or read to
understand others. Productive skills are about giving out information, like when
we speak or write to share our ideas (Spratt, Pulverness & Williams, 2005, p. 34).
An example of a receptive skill is listening, because we receive and understand
