ASSIGNMENT 5 (SEMESTER 1)..

DUE DATE: 30 MAY 2025..

PREVIEW:
SECTION 1: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (±120–150 words each)

1.1 Ubuntu and Community Life
In my community, the idea of Ubuntu—“I am because we are”—shapes how people treat each other
daily. When someone loses a family member, neighbours come together to provide food, chairs, and
emotional support, even if they aren’t closely related. People greet each other warmly, share what they
have, and often help out without expecting anything in return. During hard times, such as load shedding
or water cuts, families share candles, water, and meals. These actions show that a person’s well-being is
linked to the well-being of others. Ubuntu encourages people to care for each other as extended family.
It also teaches us to forgive and see humanity in others. Even strangers are treated with respect and
kindness. This spirit of connectedness helps maintain peace, dignity, and togetherness in our everyday
lives.

1.2 Making Peace and Ubuntu Values
Last year, two families in my street had a disagreement about a blocked drainage pipe that affected both
their homes. For weeks, there was tension between them. Eventually, an elder from the local church
brought both families together. They discussed their frustrations, and the elder reminded them of the
value of unity. They agreed to share the cost of fixing the pipe and even shared a meal after the repairs.
This moment reflected Ubuntu values clearly. Despite their anger, they chose reconciliation over ongoing
conflict. Forgiveness, understanding, and shared responsibility helped heal the division. Making peace
in this way goes beyond solving a problem—it reaffirms the value of human dignity and compassion.
Ubuntu teaches us that no one is an island. Healing a rift benefits not just the individuals involved, but
