Gauteng, South Africa
The report presents a preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a proposed
business complex at Midrand, Gauteng Province, South Africa. It presents potential
locations, describes the development, identifies required specialist studies, outlines the
scale of assessment, considers relevant legislation, refers to stakeholder involvement,
and anticipates probable impacts with corresponding mitigation measures, all on the South
African landscape.
1. Geographical Description
1.1 Geographical Location of Midrand, Gauteng Province
Midrand is one of the fast-emerging urban areas in South Africa's Gauteng Province.
Geographically, it falls between Pretoria and Johannesburg, and it is part of the Ekurhuleni
Metropolitan Municipality. The area is dominated by a mixture of residential, commercial,
and industrial land use with huge infrastructure development that is triggered by its central
location and accessibility by major highways like the N1. The landscape is rather flat to
gently sloping overall. The climate is warm, wet summers and cool, dry winters. This area is
a major economic hub, attracting numerous companies and individuals.
1.2 Possible Sites and Information
Site Alternative 1:
Accurate Location: Vacant land along the N1 highway, near the interchange of Allandale
, Road, Midrand.
Map: (The following is a conceptual map. A cadastral map would be required for the full
EIA.)

Site Characteristics: This site will likely be open land or may be open veld. Being adjacent to
the N1 highway means good exposure and access. The land being
generally flat may make building simpler. Road noise and
air contamination are likely problems. Any existing bulk infrastructure (water, electricity,
sewage) that is available may have far-reaching connections and works required. The
ecological sensitivity of the veld should be assessed.
Site Option 2
Specific Location: Unoccupied land within the established Midrand Central Business District
(CBD), near existing commercial buildings and facilities.
Map: (The following is a conceptual map. A cadastral map at detailed scale would be
required for the full EIA.)
