Children's Literature

QUESTION 1 (24 marks)

1.1.1 What is literacy?
Literacy means being able to read and write. But it’s not just that – it also means
understanding what you read and being able to use language to share your ideas
clearly with others.

1.1.2 What is emergent literacy?
Emergent literacy is what happens before a child learns to read and write on their own.
It includes the early skills, like recognising letters, enjoying story time, scribbling, or
pretending to read. These are all signs that the child is starting to understand how
reading and writing work.

1.1.3 How has technology influenced literacy in today’s education?
Technology has changed the way children learn to read and write. For example, kids
now use tablets and learning apps that can read stories aloud, show pictures, or even
correct spelling. While this can make learning fun and faster, too much screen time can
also be a problem. So, it's all about finding the right balance.

1.1.4 Name one key characteristic of children’s literature.
One important feature of children’s books is that they are often written in a fun and
simple way that is easy for children to understand. They usually include colourful
pictures and exciting stories that teach values or life lessons.
