1. Define Emotional Intelligence (EI) and describe its components (self-awareness,
self regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills) (10 marks).

Emotional Intelligence and Its Components
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage emotions,
both in oneself and in others. It helps people handle social situations, make good
decisions, and build strong relationships. Psychologist Daniel Goleman identified
five key components of EI: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy,
and social skills.

Self-Awareness
Self-awareness means knowing your own emotions and understanding how they
affect your thoughts and actions. People with strong self-awareness can recognize
their feelings and control their reactions. For example, if someone feels angry,
they understand why they are angry and how it might affect their behavior
(Goleman, 1995).

Self-Regulation
Self-regulation is the ability to control emotions and behaviors. It helps people
stay calm in stressful situations and avoid impulsive actions. For instance, instead
of shouting when frustrated, a person with good self-regulation takes deep
breaths and responds calmly (Salovey & Mayer, 1990).

Motivation
Motivation is the inner drive to achieve goals and improve oneself. People with
high motivation stay focused and work hard, even when facing challenges. They
do not give up easily and find ways to stay positive (Goleman, 1995).

Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It helps
people connect with others and show kindness. For example, if a friend is sad, an
