ENG3704 Assignment 2 2025
Unique Number:
Due date: 9 May 2025
QUESTION 1
In Mike van Graan's play Bafana Republic, satire is used to show the flaws in South African
society, especially in how the country prepared for the 2010 World Cup. Satire uses humor,
exaggeration, and irony to make people think about the mistakes or problems in society. In
this play, Van Graan uses comic sketches to poke fun at how the government and other
powerful groups acted during the World Cup preparations. While some ordinary characters
are involved, the main targets of the jokes are political leaders and official bodies.
The play starts with the character Martina van Schalkwyk, a tour guide who switches her
political loyalty depending on which party is in power. She holds up signs that say things like
"1994: Vote New National Party", "1999: Vote DA", and "2004: Vote ANC", then quickly
tosses them aside as her loyalty changes. This shows how politicians change their
messages to fit whoever is in control. Van Graan is making fun of how governments treat
their citizens like tourists, marketing their political ideas instead of addressing real needs.
Through Martina, Van Graan shows how political campaigns often focus more on
appearances than solving real problems for the people.
