QUESTION 1
In your own words, describe your understanding of the term “Life Orientation”
(LO) and elaborate on what your primary role as an LO teacher entails. You are
not allowed to use the wording from the CAPS document.
Life Orientation is a subject that helps learners grow in many different ways. It teaches
them how to know and understand themselves, how to respect others, and how to live
well in their community. The subject looks at many important parts of life, such as
making healthy choices, planning for a career, caring for the environment,
understanding human rights, and keeping the body active through physical education. It
helps learners think about real-life problems and teaches them how to make good
decisions. Life Orientation is about building the whole person mind, body, and heart, so
that learners can live a happy and balanced life.
As a Life Orientation teacher,
My job is to guide learners as they grow into responsible and confident people. I help
them learn how to handle challenges, understand their feelings, and build positive
relationships with others. I create a safe and caring classroom where learners feel free
to share their thoughts and ask questions. I also plan lessons that include group
discussions, fun activities, and problem-solving tasks that keep learners interested and
involved. I aim to make learning meaningful by connecting the lessons to their everyday
lives and by encouraging them to become active and kind members of society.
, QUESTION 2
Fostering an environment that promotes learning and development is a key
responsibility of the
Life Orientation teacher. Evaluate this responsibility and give practical examples
of how you would promote it in the LO classroom.
Creating a safe and positive classroom environment is one of the most important jobs
of a Life Orientation (LO) teacher. This environment should make all learners feel
welcome, respected, and free to express themselves without fear. When learners feel
supported, they are more likely to take part in lessons, ask questions, and share their
thoughts, which helps them grow both personally and socially.
In Life Orientation, learning goes beyond facts. It focuses on life skills like
communication, decision-making, managing emotions, and setting goals. To support
these skills, I must create a space where learners feel encouraged to talk about real-
life experiences and learn from each other. Practical examples of how I would
promote this environment in the LO classroom include:
I would use role play and open class discussions to explore topics like peer pressure,
bullying, and making healthy choices. This helps learners practise their social skills
and understand how to respond in real-life situations.
I would set clear classroom rules with the help of the learners, focusing on respect,
listening, and kindness. When learners help create the rules, they feel more
responsible for following them.
Learners could write a personal mission statement based on their values, goals, and
beliefs. This encourages self-awareness and helps them think about their future.
