, 1. DRAMA
1.1 Identify four features from the excerpt and discuss each feature with evidence
from the text. (12 marks)
One of the most important features in any drama is dialogue, and in the Master Maid
excerpt, this is used as the primary way of moving the story forward and revealing who
the characters are. Unlike narrative prose, drama uses characters’ speech to show
action and emotion. In this excerpt, each character speaks in a way that tells us more
about who they are. When Leif says to his father, “I’m going out into the world, where I
can do things just as I like,” we immediately get a sense of his boldness and
unwillingness to take advice. The same applies to the troll’s speech, which reveals his
dominance when he says, “Don’t go looking through the rooms of the house, or you
won’t live to tell about it.” Dialogue is what keeps the action alive in this play, helping the
audience follow the story through what characters say and how they say it. According to
Evans et al. (2017:57), in children’s literature and performance, dialogue plays a crucial
role in revealing character relationships and establishing conflict, both of which are
visible here.
Another clear feature is characterisation, which means the way characters are built
through what they say and do. Leif is shaped through his words and behaviour as a
stubborn and curious person who likes doing things his own way, even if it means
ignoring warnings. His character becomes clear from the start when he dismisses his
father’s warnings and goes straight to the troll’s house. The Master Maid, in contrast, is
introduced as wise and helpful. She guides Leif and gives him the exact instructions he
