, PERSONAL LANGUAGE TEACHING AND LEARNING PHILOSOPHY
1. Foundational Beliefs
I believe that language education is both a cognitive and social process that
develops a learner’s ability to communicate meaningfully, think critically, and
participate fully in a multilingual and multicultural society. Language is not only a tool
for communication but also a medium through which identity, culture, and knowledge
are constructed and expressed.
2. Purpose of Language Education
The core objective of language education, particularly at primary and high school
levels, is to cultivate learners’ linguistic proficiency across listening, speaking,
reading, and writing, while simultaneously developing their ability to think reflectively
and engage socially. Language instruction must go beyond grammar and vocabulary
acquisition to include the development of cognitive academic language proficiency
(Cummins, 2000), enabling learners to access the broader curriculum. In this way,
language education becomes a foundation for lifelong learning and effective
participation in democratic society.
3. Philosophy Regarding Learners and the Classroom Experience
In the South African educational context, where classrooms are often multilingual
and culturally diverse, my philosophy centres on a learner-centred approach. This
methodology foregrounds the learner’s prior knowledge, lived experiences, and
cultural identities. Rather than relying on teacher-driven transmission models, I
support active learning strategies where learners construct meaning through
engagement with peers, texts, and their environment. This approach aligns with
Vygotsky’s social constructivist theory, which emphasises the importance of
interaction in cognitive development.
