1.

a. Use two words to explain the relationship between English sounds
(phonemes) and alphabets (graphemes) in relation to spelling.

(2 marks for two correct words and 2 marks for plausible explanation.)

• The relationship between English sounds (phonemes) and alphabets
(graphemes) in relation to spelling can be explained using the words
inconsistent and arbitrary. The English spelling system is inconsistent
because the same phoneme can be represented by different graphemes (e.g
the sound /k/ can be spelled as "c" in "cat," "k" in "kite," or "ck" in "clock"). It is
also arbitrary because there is often no logical reason why a particular
grapheme is used to represent a specific phoneme.

b)Explain how phonemic awareness influences the pronunciation of words in
English.

• Phonemic awareness influences the pronunciation of words in English by
enabling individuals to recognize and manipulate the individual sounds within
words. This ability helps in decoding unfamiliar words and pronouncing them
accurately.

c) From your knowledge of phonemic awareness after reading Chapter 12 of
any edition of the prescribed text above and pages 96 to 98 of 2025 Study
Guide, give two words that you have learned to spell correctly and two words
that you have been mispronouncing.

• Two words I have learned to spell correctly are "separate" and "definitely.

• Two words I have been mispronouncing are "often" (previously pronounced
with a /t/ sound) and "pronunciation" (previously mispronounced with the
emphasis on the second syllable).

2. a) Explain your understanding of critical language awareness

• Critical language awareness is the understanding that language is not neutral
but is shaped by and reinforces social, cultural, and political ideologies. It
involves recognizing how language can be used to exert power, influence
beliefs, and construct identities.

b) How does your understanding of the concept critical language awareness
help you to interpret the possible meaning that can be derived in the KFC
popular catch phrase “Finger Licking Good”
• Understanding critical language awareness helps interpret the possible
meanings derived from KFC's catchphrase "Finger Licking Good" by
