Personal Statement

My name is Student, and I am currently a student enrolled in the HSY1511 History
module. I am passionate about understanding the past to make better sense of the
present and future.

Portfolio Purpose

The purpose of this Portfolio is to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and
competencies I have acquired during the HSY1511 course. It also serves as a tool to
reflect on my academic growth, organise my learning process, and present my
completed assessments in a structured and coherent format.

Course Overview – HSY1511 Course Objectives

 To gain an understanding of significant developments in the history of Africa
and the world from the 17th century to the early 21st century.
 To acquire an appreciation of the critical place of Africa in the history of the
world.
 To gain an understanding of some major themes in the history of Africa and
the world over the last four centuries, and to come to understand the
important place of Africa in these developments.
 Develop an understanding of the historical roots of current African society,
acquire respect, appreciation and understanding of different societies,
cultures and points of view.
 To produce effective learning, analytical and critical skills which are
appropriate to the discipline of History and are transferable to other disciplines
and other contexts.

Assessment 1 Reflection

1. How historians systematically study the past:
Historians study the past through a careful, systematic process that involves
collecting evidence, analysing sources, and interpreting information within a
historical context. They distinguish between primary and secondary sources,
evaluate the reliability and bias of sources, and use historical methods to
construct accurate and meaningful narratives about past events.

, 2. Analytical skills learned from studying history:
Studying history helps to develop key analytical skills such as critical thinking,
source analysis, argument construction, and the ability to compare different
perspectives. These skills also include evaluating evidence, identifying cause
and effect, recognising bias, and constructing logical conclusions based on
historical facts.

3. Main components of a well-written paragraph:
A well-written paragraph includes a clear topic sentence that introduces the
main idea, supporting sentences that provide evidence or explanation, and a
concluding sentence that reinforces the main point. The paragraph should be
coherent, focused on one idea, and follow a logical flow from beginning to
end.

4. Main components of a well-structured essay:
A well-structured essay includes an introduction with a clear thesis statement,
body paragraphs that each focus on a single point supported by evidence,
and a conclusion that summarises the argument and restates the main idea.
The essay should also include proper referencing and follow a logical
progression of ideas.

5. What constitutes academic dishonesty in history assessment:
Academic dishonesty in history assessments includes plagiarism, using
unauthorised sources during tests, submitting work that is not your own, or
falsifying historical evidence. It also involves copying from others, failing to
cite sources correctly, and using artificial intelligence or contract cheating.
These actions undermine the academic integrity of the learning process and
are taken seriously by the university.
