The 4th-grade unit 2 on Empires in the Middle Ages has several goals or
objectives for the students to reach, and each lesson outlines the objectives
to be met. CKLA is designed to be sequential throughout the grade levels so
background knowledge can be built as students progress. This way, students
can cumulatively understand a broad range of world history topics and
engage in deep conversations.

Lesson 1 objectives of 4th-grade Unit 2 are (there are several lessons in this
unit):
 Students will sequence five events on a timeline spanning BCE and CE
to accurately place their discussion of the Middle Ages in the context of
time and their background knowledge. [RI.4.7]

,  Students will paraphrase information from the Reader to participate in
a discussion about the people, events, and important ideas from the
Middle Ages. [RI.4.1]
 Students will label a Map Locate the modern-day countries of Spain,
France, England, Germany, and Italy, and identify that region as a
part of the Roman Empire. [RI.4.7]

Each lesson has its own list of objectives to be met throughout the lesson.

Context

A.2.a.

Across the country there has been concern about students’ reading ability.
The Science of Reading is the buzzword of the decade, so reading curricula
have become more explicit. Teaching phonics, phonological awareness,
and fluency is crucially important in elementary school to successfully
address the reading problem. CKLA has worked to target reading skills
while incorporating vocabulary and comprehension skills.
