Forensic Methods and Techniques: Module A
Question 1
1.1 Locard Exchange Principle and Application (4)
The Locard Exchange Principle states that when two objects come into contact, there
is always a transfer of material from one to the other. This principle is foundational in
forensic science because it implies that criminals will both leave something at a crime
scene and take something away.
In this case, the principle can be applied by examining the BMW X1 and Audi A4 for
trace evidence. For instance, hair, fibres from clothing, fingerprints, or biological
material like blood or sweat might be found in the vehicles. Similarly, particles from the
vehicle, like carpet fibres or dust, may be found on the suspects’ clothing or bodies.
1.2 Types of Evidence Transferred (4)
The types of evidence that might be transferred between the suspects and the vehicles
include:
Latent fingerprints on the steering wheel, dashboard, or door handles.
DNA evidence from hair, skin cells, or bodily fluids.
Fibres from the suspects’ clothing left on seats or other surfaces.
Gunshot residue (GSR) that could transfer to the vehicle’s interior after
suspects fired weapons.
