Leadership Self-Reflection
As a Senior Director of Ambulatory Support Services for Luminis
Health and having 25 years of leadership experience, I have had the
opportunities to develop my leadership skills and work with many mentors
of the years learning from them. To continue my growing and learning
opportunities, I am always reflecting on my strengths and areas for
improvement. I have completed the American College of Healthcare
Executives Competency Tool (ACHE) for a competency-based reflection of
my leadership skills.
This tool is broken down in five categories to include communication
and relationship management, leadership, professionalism, knowledge of
healthcare environment and finally business skills and knowledge (Garman
, & Johnson, 2006). Through these five categories a person is assessed by
skill XX and assigned points through three competencies levels, “Novice,”
“Competent,” and “Expert.” (Garman & Johnson, 2006). The three
competency levels can aide in a person’s current state performance and
identify any areas of improvement.
The first category, communication, and relationship management
use three domains for evaluation relationship management,
communication skills and facilitation and negotiation.
Being able to communicate and develop relationships in leadership
roles is imperative to maintain positive interactions with both internal
