Question 1: Breetzke et al. Article
1. What is the spatial problem in this study, and what qualifies it as a spatial
problem?
The spatial problem is the spatial clustering of sexual violence around schools in
Khayelitsha, South Africa (Breetzke et al., 2021, p. 16). It is spatial because it involves
the geographic location of crime incidents and schools, allowing for an analysis of their
proximity and distribution on the earth's surface, which is a key characteristic of a spatial
problem as outlined in Learning Unit 1 (GGH2603 Study Guide, LU1, p. 22).
2. Where does this problem occur? What are the absolute and relative locations?
Absolute Location: The problem occurs in the township of Khayelitsha, located on
the urban periphery of Cape Town, South Africa. Its approximate absolute location is
given by its coordinates, for example, around 34°S latitude and 18°E longitude
(Breetzke et al., 2021, p. 6; Figure 1).
Relative Location: Relatively, Khayelitsha is situated in the southwestern corner of
South Africa, on the outskirts of the city of Cape Town. It is distinct and distant from
the former White urban core of the city (Breetzke et al., 2021, p. 5).
