SECTION A
QUESTION 1
Briefly describe the circumstances under which a security
official can invoke "private defense." Include an example to
support your explanation.
[5 Marks]
A security official can invoke private defense when they act to
protect themselves or another person from an unlawful and
immediate threat of harm. The defense must be necessary and
proportional to the threat, and it should only be used as a last
resort when no other means are available to prevent the attack.
Example:
If an intruder breaks into a warehouse and attacks a security
official with a weapon, the official may use reasonable force,
such as pepper spray or a baton, to defend themselves or
others from injury. This would be considered private defense if
the response was proportionate to the threat posed.
