Section A: History of Education.
1.1 What is meant by the expression “Global North and Global South”? [15]
The terms “Global North” and “Global South” are not purely geographic but are socio-
political and economic concepts used to describe the divide between more developed,
industrialised nations and less developed, historically colonised countries.
Global North typically refers to wealthy, industrialised nations primarily located
in North America and Western Europe, including countries like the United States,
Canada, the UK, Germany, and France. These nations have strong economies,
advanced technologies, and powerful positions in global governance and
academia.
Global South, on the other hand, refers to regions such as Africa, Latin America,
parts of Asia, and Oceania. These countries were largely colonised and have
experienced historical exploitation, underdevelopment, and marginalisation in
global systems of knowledge and economy.
In the context of education research, the “Global North” dominates authorship,
publishing, and scholarly discourse. Most educational paradigms and histories taught
and researched globally reflect the perspectives and priorities of the North, while voices
from the Global South are underrepresented or assessed through Eurocentric lenses.
