Teaching practice for Intermediate Phase I

1. In your own words, explain what the main information in the CAPS document is
about.

The CAPS document for English Home Language provides a detailed plan of what
should be taught and assessed in the subject from Grade 4 to Grade 6. It outlines the
aims of the curriculum, the skills learners should acquire, time allocations, the structure
of the school year, and guidelines for assessment. It also provides an Annual Teaching
Plan (ATP), which breaks down the content to be taught week by week. The purpose is
to ensure uniformity and consistency in what learners across South Africa are taught in
the Intermediate Phase.

2. Read the section on the general aims of the South African Curriculum and
summarise the aspects listed under this heading.

 Equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to be
responsible and productive citizens.
 Promote the development of critical and creative thinking.
 Foster social justice, respect for human rights, and the Constitution.
 Encourage learners to value diversity and work towards unity.
 Develop learners' abilities to act ethically, responsibly, and environmentally
sustainably.
 Prepare learners for further education and the world of work.
