In recent years, academic dishonesty has become a major concern in higher education institutions.
Plagiarism, cheating in exams, falsifying data, and using artificial intelligence tools unethically are just
some of the dishonest practices observed among students. To combat this trend, many universities have
introduced a compulsory module on integrity in education. While some may argue that such a module
adds to students’ workload, I believe that it plays a vital role in cultivating a culture of ethical conduct,
accountability, and professionalism.
One of the major advantages of a compulsory integrity module is that it educates students on what
constitutes academic misconduct. Many students unknowingly commit plagiarism or collaborate
inappropriately because they do not fully understand academic rules. A structured module can clarify
these issues, explain referencing conventions, and define acceptable academic behaviour. According to
McCabe, Butterfield, and Treviño (2012), educational interventions significantly reduce dishonesty when
students are made aware of institutional expectations and consequences.
Furthermore, such a module helps to instil lifelong values that go beyond academia. Integrity is not just
important in the classroom, but also in the workplace and society at large. By learning the importance
of honesty, responsibility, and ethical decision-making, students are better prepared to act with integrity
